Yin & Yang, Column
2014
The ancient symbol of Yin and Yang represents the uniting of opposites: the constant and universal truth that opposites are interdependent realities that reinforce one another with their differences. Great art from all cultures has this truth at its heart – opposition between light and dark, warm and cool, melting edges and crisp detail, and central to all is the harmony of opposition between male and female. Richard MacDonald has deconstructed this self-evident truth and unfathomable mystery in the two interlocking figures of Yin and Yang.

The Artist's Touch
Richard MacDonald’s method of working by directly observing a living model is becoming increasingly rare amongst artists of our time. Developing the sensitivity and facility to watch a person in motion and capture anatomy, movement, mood, and personality in clay is an extraordinarily complex and demanding task, yet the quality of the work speaks to the vitality, energy, and power made possible by this experience.
