Plein Air Landscape
A landscape can carry human emotions: we read into the clouds our moods and our feelings, and places carry deep remembrances for us that go beyond the descriptive lay of the land. Richard MacDonald’s painted landscapes are wonderful examples of this emotive quality. Plein Air is simply the French expression to describe the act of painting outdoors, capturing the ever-changing landscape in all lights and seasons.

The Artist's Touch
Richard MacDonald’s method of working by directly observing a living model is becoming increasingly rare amongst artists of our time. Developing the sensitivity and facility to watch a person in motion and capture anatomy, movement, mood, and personality in clay is an extraordinarily complex and demanding task, yet the quality of the work speaks to the vitality, energy, and power made possible by this experience.
