Orpheus Ascending
2013
Orpheus Ascending, is truly a grand statement about one of the central themes of humanity: love, self-sacrifice, and the human ability to conquer the seemingly unconquerable. The strength of Orpheus is elegantly portrayed, the drape of Eurydice’s passive body is a statement of trust, and the two combine to create a piece that defies description and analysis. Like all great figurative sculpture, this piece delivers a strong emotional message without exaggeration, without superfluous gesture or a single element that is out of harmony with the whole. It is complete. It is perfect in its restraint.

The Artist's Touch
Richard MacDonald’s method of working by directly observing a living model is becoming increasingly rare amongst artists of our time. Developing the sensitivity and facility to watch a person in motion and capture anatomy, movement, mood, and personality in clay is an extraordinarily complex and demanding task, yet the quality of the work speaks to the vitality, energy, and power made possible by this experience.
