No Way Home

2010

No Way Home documents the historical presence of a legendary dancer and has a foundational story about overcoming challenges and adversity to create beauty and art. Carlos Acosta is a legendary dancer who embodies all the best qualities of a male dancer: sensitivity, strength, and physical perfection. Coming from unpromising circumstances in Cuba to become a sensation with the Royal Ballet, Acosta embodies the spirit of unwavering faith that is behind all significant human achievements. The classic contraposto stance of the piece links it to the sculptural traditions of the Renaissance, while the depth of expression on the face hints at the long and tireless dedication a dancer must bring to his art.

The Artist's Touch

Richard MacDonald’s method of working by directly observing a living model is becoming increasingly rare amongst artists of our time. Developing the sensitivity and facility to watch a person in motion and capture anatomy, movement, mood, and personality in clay is an extraordinarily complex and demanding task, yet the quality of the work speaks to the vitality, energy, and power made possible by this experience.
