The Ritual, Column

2012

The Ritual is a two-figure composition that embodies the feminine and masculine energy of moonlight, darkness and mystery. Emerging from the architectonic strata of time, The Ritual dances with uninhibited sensuality and joyful exuberance. Both dancers lift themselves as if to fly with arms outstretched and delicate fingers fluttering. One foot poised on the past, each dancer thrusts the other leg high as they step into the unknown as one. This represents the eternal “yes” – the ability to embody the present moment with strength and confidence. Richard MacDonald believes The Ritual reminds us to celebrate the moment by relaxing and allowing the life force to dance through us.

The Artist's Touch

Richard MacDonald’s method of working by directly observing a living model is becoming increasingly rare amongst artists of our time. Developing the sensitivity and facility to watch a person in motion and capture anatomy, movement, mood, and personality in clay is an extraordinarily complex and demanding task, yet the quality of the work speaks to the vitality, energy, and power made possible by this experience.
