Emotion / Passion

Nureyev

1998

This is a private moment of reverie as Nureyev steps off the rehearsal stage and into his dressing room. What are his thoughts? What is he feeling? It serves as a juxtaposition of strength and grace. This image was a split second observation which revealed the strength that is necessary to perform the extraordinary graceful movement and rare feats that only Nureyev, one of the greatest dancers of all time, could capture. MacDonald has revealed this strength through the musculature of his back, arms, and legs. He has given us a special empathetic view of the performance as he leaves the stage. There is a skillful handling of the material of the tights. We believe that the fabric is stretching under the tension of the muscled arms as he removes the straps from his tights.

The Artist's Touch

Richard MacDonald’s method of working by directly observing a living model is becoming increasingly rare amongst artists of our time. Developing the sensitivity and facility to watch a person in motion and capture anatomy, movement, mood, and personality in clay is an extraordinarily complex and demanding task, yet the quality of the work speaks to the vitality, energy, and power made possible by this experience.
